Whippany, NJ — The Summer Antiques Show at Birchwood Manor will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26, 2015 at the beautiful Birchwood Manor historic mansion. Exceptional antiques dealers will be offering the finest selection of antique furniture, mid-century modern, Asian, 17th through 20th century decorative arts, textiles, fine art, jewelry and much more. The diversity of the dealers and the emphasis on quality are just two of the reasons this has been a favorite antiques shopping event for over 35 years. Stanhope, NJ — The return of the Waterloo Village Antiques Fair made it’s debut on Saturday and Sunday, June 6th and 7th. By the end of the weekend, over 2,000 people had attended this long-awaited event. The dealers were thrilled with their sales at the show and the event drew a large number of new and younger buyers. “This was particularly exciting for us, seeing the next generation of antiques collectors come out to learn and shop. They were having a ball and the dealers enjoyed sharing their knowledge with them. “ said Allison Kohler, President, JMK Shows. By Sunday, it was clear that the dealers and shoppers alike wanted a second event this summer so the next Waterloo Village Antiques Fair is scheduled for Labor Day weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 5th and 6th. Atlantic City, NJ — Allison Kohler, President of JMK Shows, announced on April 7th that the Atlantic City Antiques Show would permanently be moving to the new Waterfront Conference Center at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, NJ. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the harbor, Harrah’s Waterfront Conference Center is the largest, most technologically advanced facility between Baltimore to Boston. After several exciting meetings, Kohler knew this was the perfect new home for this long-running and very important antiques event. “This has been a long and challenging journey to arrive here,” said Kohler. “The past couple of years have certainly tested my tenacity but I was resolute, despite the venue issues, to ensure for the dealers and antiques collectors, that this jewel of a show would sustain and continue to thrive.” Over the past few years, Kohler faced challenges with scheduling and the facility itself at the Atlantic City Convention Center which had been its home for so many years. In 2014, she was thrilled to have finally found what she thought would be the new permanent home for the show, the Mark Etess Arena at the Trump Taj Mahal. “This was a fabulous venue for us so when I received the news in October that the ‘Taj’ would be closing, I was devastated. But, I knew, with timing not on my side, I had to secure an alternate location for the spring 2015 show. So I made the decision to go back to the Convention Center even though the dates available were a bit later than I would have liked. I was determined to make it work.” The later April dates proved to be a problem for so many of the dealers in the show. Scheduling conflicts with other events they had already booked, would have made this event less than the caliber it has always been. “I had to make one of the most difficult decisions in my career, to cancel the April 2015 show, but I didn’t have a choice. I knew that I had to keep my eye on the big picture for my dealers, the show and the industry overall. In my heart, I knew this was the right decision and that this short-term inconvenience would result in long-term benefits.” Kohler went on to say that, “The antiques industry, and shows in particular, have faced challenges over the past several years. I know how frustrating this is for attendees and dealers to have events switched, cancelled — it can easily undermine the faith and confidence it a promoter. Quite honestly, there are probably promoters in the country who would have ‘thrown in the towel’ but that is not who I am or what JMK Shows is about. The antiques industry is in my blood, it’s a passion for me and event promotion is what I do.” The Atlantic City Antiques Show has two upcoming events scheduled at the Waterfront Conference Center at Harrah’s. The first will be the fall 2015 event to be held November 21 & 22, 2015 at the height of fall antiquing season with the spring show scheduled for March 12 & 13, 2016. “With the movement of the November Pier Show to an earlier date, it gave us one of the biggest antique shopping weekends of the year to debut our fall event. And with the uncertainty surrounding the March Pier Show, dealers are already clamoring to sign on for both shows. Coming from the private collection of Jeanne Bertoia, this particular toy features six (6) exquisitely carved and painted gondolas and center box with musical movement. Also from Jeanne Bertoia's private collection will be an absolutely charming very rare blue-robed Father Christmas (PHOTO 2) which was actually a store window display in a German shop in the 1890s. This work of art stands 29 inches and the tree limb is actually made of feathers which have survived in exquisite condition these many years. From a private collection, a set of three Dent oversized fire toys (PHOTO 2) truly are a glimpse into the culture and history of America at the time. Originally founded in 1894 as The Dent Hardware Company, in 1898, Henry Dent, a man of vision and innovation, began creating the finest cast-iron toys ever made. Known also for their extremely large size, measuring between 23" and 33", these three examples are the largest horse-drawn examples of this kind. Each toy is an exact replica of the horse-drawn fire equipment that was used. Rounding this exhibit will be several fine examples of pre-WWII American toys as well as a grouping of character toys from the 1920s through the 1940's. There will also be cast iron mechanical banks, a particular specialty of Bertoia. These mechanical banks, while classified as toys at the time, were actually educational for the children as a tool to learn about money and saving it. Finishing the exhibit will be American tin toys from the turn of the century and toy trains from the early 20th century. The March 2014 Atlantic City Antiques Show is going "Back to the Boardwalk," being held at the Trump Taj Mahal. Contact: Over 80 antiques and vintage dealers will be exhibiting at the magnificent Birchwood Manor Antiques Show in Whippany, NJ on July 27th and 28th. This is the longest-running show in New Jersey, and continues its tradition of showcasing a variety of merchandise, including American, European and Asian furniture; silver; paintings; prints and posters; art pottery and art glass; porcelain and pottery; lamps; bronzes; clocks; Victorian and Depression glass; jewelry; Oriental rugs; books (both antiquarian and reference); scientific instruments; vintage fashion; Oriental specialists; linens; and probably anything else you are looking for. Along with the great selection of antiques and vintage items, there will be expert glass repair on both Saturday and Sunday with Wade Nulton. Nulton repairs glasses, bowls, marbles, vases, glass paperweights and other items. He also has a technique for cleaning sick glass, which is glass that has become stained or fogged; he even can clean the insides of decanters. Another restorer who will be at the show to help you with your broken pieces will be Louis Pirrello. He does superior quality restoration and repair of fine porcelain, ceramics, pottery and china. Pirrello is also able to restore damages to chalkware, early stoneware, composition, papier-mâché, ivory, and jade. He will be present to consult with clients on both Saturday and Sunday. Philip Chasen will be bringing American and French Art Nouveau and Art Deco glass and lamps, including works by Daum Nancy, Galle and Tiffany Studios. Some examples will be a gorgeous Tiffany lily lamp, a vivid Daum Nancy Fall scenic vase and a very rare original Louis Icart etching, "Happy Birthday". Saddle River Gallery of Upper Saddle River, specializes in 19th and 20th Century French Post Impressionist and Modern Art. Partners Camille Calabrese and Nissan Haber have been in business about 15 years. This will be their first time at show. "We are excited because this is our first local show," Camille said. "We had a gallery in Englewood, but we closed it, so we want people to know that we are still around and selling art." They deal with both living and dead artists. They focus on high end art but they also have things in a more modest price range, mostly works of living artists. They will definitely bring some works by H. Claude Pissarro, who was the grandson of Camille Pissarro. They will also bring a few prints and watercolors. "We are service oriented; we will go to our clients' home and help to hang, we like to have customers return to us," Camille stated. Tutto dal Mondo, from Penn Valley, PA, will also be exhibiting at the show, with old English silver from the Georgian period through the 1920s, Victorian jewelry, Deco jewelry, an extensive collection of Bakelite, and advertising items, including unusual old tins, and larger pieces such as a counter display for Pond's creams, which is very colorful. Sheila Parish is the proprietor of this firm, and had exhibited at Birchwood for several years, then stopped, for a while, but she came back last year and did very well, saying that she was very pleased with the results. An example of her Victorian jewelry is a beautiful 18 Ct. Gold Victorian necklace from England in excellent condition. It is a strong and intricate design and has a medieval sense. According to Parish, "This is a collector's dream." Marvin Baer of The Ivory Tower is a specialist in Oriental antiques, especially Satsuma. His pieces are featured in Imari, Satsuma and Other Japanese Exports published by Schiffer in 1997. He also carries other Japanese and Asian antiques. He has been in business for 35 years, since 1978. He has exhibited at Birchwood since its inception, probably around 1979, a year after he started his antiques business. . Originally the show was at the Meadowbrook, then moved to Birchwood Manor around 1979. It's a standard show for him, meaning that he always counts on enough business to warrant coming back. Marvin's son Matthew has been in business with him for last 18 years. Matt had another career before that; he was captain of a fishing boat, but his dad twisted his arm to come into business and Matt never looked back. He loves the business as much as his dad. "With any new clients I make sure that they deal with Matt because he is the future of the business," Marvin said. Gardner Burke specializes in French, European and American porcelain from the late 19th-early 20th centuries. The two partners are sisters, and their porcelains are primarily hand painted porcelain. This will be their 10th year at Birchwood, and they will be bringing some big decorator pieces, especially Limoges, Belleek and Picard. Gem de la Gem, a jewelry specialist, sells everything from costume to fine jewelry, dating from the 1920s to contemporary. Hailing from Teaneck NJ, Shahn Rosler has had the business since 1972, and she has done the Birchwood show for 20 years. "Allison took over her parents' business, I took over my parents business," she quipped. She also sell designer handbags and Hermes scarves. I used to have mostly landscapes, but now I try to have outstanding examples of every type of painting: figurative, modernism, genre scenes.” Many of the paintings are purchased in Belgium, where Kelleher says that modernism began in the late 19th century. Elinor Penna, from New York, is an expert in Victorian Staffordshire figures, and will bring pieces with a hunting theme to the show. Among her offerings will be her own personal collection of Victorian foxes. There are spill vases, groups, and watch holders. “I will have a baker’s dozen of foxes,” she said, “as well as a variety of hunting dogs; pointers, setters and hounds.” John Rogers Antiques hails from New London, New Hampshire. This will be his first time exhibiting at the Alexandria Antiques Show, and he will be showing mostly “things that hang on the wall. Windows and doors from China are hung like paintings, and exhibit beautiful design and craftsmanship,” he explained. He is working on a book on this subject. When asked if he goes to China to buy, he said, “I have a Chinese business partner, and I find that if I accompany him while he is buying, the price goes up, so I leave most of the buying to him.” Howard Price Fine Art will be coming to Alexandria from Boynton Beach, Florida. He sells fine art prints covering such categories as Americana, Botanical, Historical, Native American, Sporting, Maps, and others, as well as select fine watercolors. Dorothy Hunt is a specialist with 35 years’ experience in valuing and auctioning dolls. She is the owner and head auctioneer of Sweetbriar Auctions, which holds doll auctions regularly in the New Jersey area.. Bruce Horton and his partner, Daniel Charest, of Bridgeport, PA, will be exhibitng their usual eclectic display of period fine art, furniture, bronzes and decorative art. They have been buying and selling antiques for over 25 years and are primarily show dealers. Bernice Conn of Voorhees, NJ will have an interesting display featuring vanity items. These include powder bowls, rouge jars, scent bottles, and other items that appear on a ladies’ vanity. “In the Victorian period they were sterling, Edwardians used tortoise, and the art deco period was enamel,” she explained. She will also be showing walking sticks, student lamps, small furniture, oil paintings and samplers. This will be her first time back after an absence of several years. Judith and George Locher are from Akron, OH, and will be highlighting a wonderful 3 piece Old Paris Porcelain mantel set, c. 1840. They will also be showing a 33” tall Satsuma vase, a charming figure of a baby made out of Parian, sleeping in a little brass bed. They will be showing bronzes and clocks and a collection of small jeweled trinket boxes. Scott Rosemnam is a specialist in vintage advertising, and his display will include vintage serving trays, thermometers, product displays, calendars, pocket mirrors, and porcelain, tin and cardboard signs. He is one of the foremost dealers in the country in Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola items. Everything he has is 100% original and dates from 1890-1950. He has been doing the Atlantic City show since 1996. Obnoxious Antiques, run by John Polito of Burlington, NJ, likes things unusual and strange. He’s been dealing for over 40 years, and carries carnival items, circus memorabilia, gambling machines, fiberglass animals, and coin operated machines. “Probably what people don’t think much about buying or selling, we buy and sell,” he said. And to prove his point, he listed some of the items he will have in his display, including a large fiberglass gorilla (which came along with some elephants, birds and snakes) from the “Rain Forest Car Wash” in the Midwest. He will also have a collection of vintage puppets which were purchased from a third-generation puppeteer, and a porcelain hand dryer that was used in a public rest room in the 1930s. “It’s still functional,” he quipped. The partners of Gardner Burke Antiques are sisters, and share a passion for hand painted porcelain. Their specialties are Limoges, American Belleek, Pickard, other hand painted porcelain, and crystal, which includes vases, perfume bottles and glassware. They set up a booth with an array of this fine china and glass, and pride themselves on their knowledge, which shines through as they share their wares with the public. Another specialist in pottery is Barbara Gerr Antiques, who, with her partner Arnie Small, have been exhibitors at Atlantic City since 1995. They deal in American Art Pottery, specializing in Roseville, Weller, Rookwood, Newcomb and Grueby. They also carry a large selection of arts and crafts pottery, Pilin pottery, southern pottery, and oak framed arts and crafts tiles. They will be featuring some examples of Newcomb College pottery, including a rare 6” vase in a classic large ball form, decorated in signature Newcomb moon and moss style, and glazed in a gorgeous rich deep blue and lavender combination. Not only is it marked with the Newcomb College cipher on the base, but it also has its original paper label with the date code for 1932. Sharon Wendrow of Bayside, NY, has been doing Atlantic City for at least 20 years. Her business is “Memory Lane” and she specializes in dolls, toys, and some World’s Fair material. Among her offerings will be a Thumbelina doll in its original box. Thumbelinas were made by Ideal Toy Company, who also made Shirley Temple, Tammy, Judy Garland, and Deanna Durbin dolls. The Thumbelina, from the late 1960s, has a button that you turn and the doll wiggles just like a real baby. This was very innovative for its time. Wendrow will also be bringing Ginny dolls, Alexander dolls in their original boxes, several Anna Lee dolls from the 1980s plus a large group of other dolls and toys.

Contact: Morristown is one of the longest-running antiques shows in New Jersey, in an historic area featuring Revolutionary War sites which include Washington’s headquarters from December 1779 to June of 1780, all the way up to fabulous Victorian and Gothic Revival homes. The show is always popular for its high energy, constant crowds of attendees, and always a “buzz” on the show floor. There will be several special features. Paul Nulton will be on hand for a glass repair clinic. Paul can make all of your chipped and damaged glass new and usable again. Another expert who will be on hand during the show is Louis Pirello, whose business is named “Restorations by Louis.” He specializes in pottery and porcelain restoration, and prides himself on his meticulous methods of matching colors and glazes. Unlike many restorers, he assures his clients that he will not discolor or overspray their valued pieces. Always popular is Linda Roberts of White Orchid Appraisals LLC, who will be on hand to appraise your treasures for a fee of $5.00. She is an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers, and has 20 years’ experience in the antiques and appraisal field. Returning to the show after an absence of five years is Michael Millard, whose business is Vent D’Est, and Akin Kolawole who owns Embellish Antiques. Akin had participated in the Morristown Antiques Show for about 15 years, and had a shop on Boston’s famous Charles Street, which has been known for its antiques shops for nearly a century. He moved to Chapel Hill, NC and quit his business for five years, running a FedEx route in the interim. “After the last Christmas, when I was getting home every night at 8 or 9:00, I decided that was enough, so I sold the route and returned full time to antiques,” he said. Morristown will be his first show in the Northeast since he came back into the business. He has just returned from France with a large container of art deco furniture and accessories, and will be setting up an intriguing booth with all of his new finds. Charles Bruel and his wife Lori, Glenmont, NY, are five year veterans of the show. Lori recounted the adventure of a big snowstorm at last year’s show. “The armory lost power, as all of the trees came down in the area, bringing down the wires as well. We thought we’d have to spend the night in the Armory. Allison (Kohler) was terrific. She kept everyone calm, trying to figure out how to handle the evening if we had to stay. She checked to see who had food and beverages so we wouldn’t go hungry. Finally they cleared a road so we could all go back to our motels, but we all trooped back to the armory the next day. There still wasn’t any power there, but we managed to have a decent show anyway.” She continued with her comments on the show: “the people who come to the Morristown show are very knowledgeable; perhaps more so than any other show we do.” The Breuels will be bringing clocks, artwork and boxes. An oil on canvas board signed by Cecil Chichester is evocative of last year’s snow storm. Chichester was a prominent member of the Woodstock Art Colony, and this painting is done in an impressionistic style with lovely muted colors. They will also be featuring a German tall clock with a mahogany case in solid mahogany featuring cross band and floral inlays; a broken arch pediment with turned wood finial; ogee feet; beveled glass door; an 8 day 3 weight movement and a musical chime on 5 tubes. The brass dial has pierced spandrels, a moon phase disc, a seconds bit and calendar, and best of all, it’s in excellent running condition. Zane Moss, New York, NY, will be exhibiting a varied selection of fine 18th and 19th century furniture and wonderful accessories, paintings, porcelain, One of his specialties is Staffordshire animals from the 19th century, and Moss has one of the largest selections available. Included in his display will be a rare pair of elephant spill vases, circa 1860. The elephants were based on the famous “Jumbo” who was an African elephant, sold to P.T. Barnum in 1860 for $10,000. Also featured in Moss’ booth will be a number of Black Forest carvings. Most people think of Black Forest carvings as bears, but Moss will be showing dogs, owls, roosters, and even a carved boar’s head mounted onto a pipe rack. Katherine King of King Art, Milwaukee, WI, specializes in fine art from the 16th to the 20th century. One of her featured items at the show will be an oil on canvas by Edward Redfield (1865-1965) showing another snow scene in the impressionist style. Redfield was a premier painter of the New Hope School of American Impressionism, and, in his time, was considered one of the best landscape painters in the country. Throughout his career, he won many awards for his art, including a bronze medal at the Paris Exposition of 1900, a bronze medal at the Pan-American Exposition in 1901, the Gold Medal of Honor in 1907, a silver medal in 1904 from the St. Louis Exposition, and many more. His works can be found in most major American museums. Essex Antiquarians of Essex, MA, will be showing 18th and 19th century Amreican, English, Continental and Asian antiques, featuring period furniture and fine and decorative arts. A recent find, according to partner Rick Bevilaqua, is a ship portrait of the bark “Respigadera” of Liverpool, England, painted by Francis Hustwick (British, 1797-1865), It is most interesting because the work of this 19th century artist has only recently come to light. Many of his works are not signed, and it is hypothesized that he worked part time for another artist (perhaps Joseph Heard), so that when he had his own commissions, he was forbidden to sign his name lest Heard should lose a client. Interestingly, the portraits of American ships that have been discovered are nearly all signed by Hustwick. Hustwick lived in a somewhat seedy section of Liverpool, where he had moved from Hull. It is assumed that there was far more work to be done in the port of Liverpool. Other dealers in fine art include Nicholas DiBenedetto from East Quogue, NY; Patrick Hastings of PA; Art and Antique Gallery from MA; Jaffe & Thurston of NY; and Tradewinds of RI. There will also be four exhibitors with prints: Joyce Krieg, Yosha Graphics, Antique Prints & Paper, and Maile Allen. David Pownall Willis will be exhibiting his usual breathtaking display of rare 18th and early 19th century porcelain, pottery and silver. Contact: The Meadowbrook changed from a dinner theater to a disco in the late ‘70s, and the manager took a new job at a place called Birchwood Manor. the show continues in that location to this day. It was listed in CountryHome Magazine as one of the “100 Hot Antiques Shows” in America. In a reminiscent mood, Rona Kohler told of the days when Governor Kean issued a proclamation declaring “Antiques Appreciation Days” for the state of New Jersey, in commemoration of Birchwood Manor, the state’s oldest show. He arrived at the show in his limousine with his security guards. This was in the 1980s, and the tradition continued for several years during the dates of Birchwood Manor. “We always dressed up for our shows,” said Mrs. Kohler. “Jesse wore a tux and I wore an evening gown. The show had an elegant look, and so did we.” She added, “We always required our dealers to give a guarantee—I think we were the first ones to do this.” In 2001 their daughter, Allison, took the reins, and is now president of JMK. .She has worked diligently to build on the foundation created by her parents and now has fourteen antiques shows plus some beer festivals. The shows cover every possible aspect of the antiques and collectibles market, and include higher end venues such as Alexandria, Virginia, White Plains, New York, Sarasota, Florida, and Morristown, New Jersey. On the other end of the spectrum is Atlantic City, where almost anything can be found, from 18th century candlesticks to vintage toys to jewelry to 1950s lunchboxes. The always popular Doll and Teddy Bear Show is held annually in November in Teaneck, New Jersey. Many of the shows have extra features. In the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut shows, there are glass and china restorers, as well as certified appraisers to help people value their treasures. This is a tradition begun by Rona and Jesse Kohler. They would even cook a Thanksgiving dinner for the dealers during their Thanksgiving show, and would throw a New Year’s party for the exhibitors at the New Year’s show. Nicholas and Regina DiBenedetto from East Quogue, NY will display a selection of Regency and Empire furniture along with paintings and fine art. The couple also provides conservation and restoration services for oil paintings. Asian antiques will be well represented by a number of exhibitors including Charles A. Cohn of Elkins Park, PA whose focus is on Chinese and Japanese antiques and silver. Returning to the show is Don Ourecky from Antiques by Mah Jong. Don specializes in Chinese and Japanese export wares including Canton porcelain, Imari and Kutani ceramics, Rose Canton, and Rose Medallion. Antiques by Mah Jong always carries a nice selection of custom made lamps. Bruce Philips of Fair Trade Antiques from Heath, Massachusetts, sells magnificent Anglo-Raj furniture and accessories from India (1757-1947). His selection gleams with an assortment of exotic hardwoods including rosewood, teak, satinwood, camphor, and mahogany. Many exhibitors are well known to show-goers and include Joyce Krieg Antique Prints from Mendham, NJ specializing in seventeenth and eighteenth century hand-colored copper plate engravings. The Kriegs’ inventory includes works by Besler (1613) and Merriam (1715). Their framed and unframed inventory is featured in all price ranges. Maile Allen Antiques, Colonia, NY displays antique maps and prints including a large 1853 engraving of Washington Crossing the Delaware in original frame. Sabina Wood is from Bryn Mawr, PA and has a summer shop in Northeast Harbor, ME. She brings to the show 19th century photography including a wide selection of views of Italy, an assortment of linens, early brass, and wooden utensils. Mimi Gunn from Morristown, NJ is a general line dealer bringing paintings with an emphasis on late nineteenth century American landscapes, silver, glass, jewelry, and handcrafted items. The new show features 70 quality exhibitors with a diverse range of antiques and decorative arts as well as a special Christmas loan exhibit, “A Nineteenth Century New York Christmas,” by one of its sponsors, the National Christmas Center in Paradise, Pennsylvania. New York City is never more exciting than at Christmas time, and the magic of Christmas in New York is exactly what the National Christmas Center wants to recreate for visitors to the show. “I remember going to bed with an empty stocking hoping to see Santa,” the Center’s Curator and Historian Jim Morrison spoke with enthusiasm. “In the morning the tree was up, my stocking was lying beside me all filled up with goodies, and it was just an incredible time. These mechanical department store figures recreate the magic of Christmas for kids of all ages. “It’s all about memories,” Morrison tells. “And when people visit this collection of memorabilia celebrating Christmases of New York past, they will rediscover their own memories.” The exhibit will include a gallery of depictions of Christmas in nineteenth century New York City. Engravings from Harper’s and other sources illustrate sleighing in Central Park, shopping on Fifth Avenue, and other metropolitan holiday views. In a central exhibit is a Christmas garden featuring a large Victorian Christmas tree on a platform with a Lionel train and folk art village beneath. Morrison likens this part of the exhibit to the memorable displays he helped create at the Gotham Book Mart on West 47th Street years ago. Behind the scenes, since F & W’s announcement, the Atlantic City Convention Center had been interviewing and evaluating a number of promoters who could bring a show representative of the caliber it once was, back to that venue. Among the pieces he will feature is a rare large Regency dining table measuring 78” in diameter and a two-pedestal Georgian dining table. A set of 8 Heplewhite shield-back dining chairs is exceptional as is the very rare Irish card table with carved eagle heads on the legs. Rounding out his fine collection will be a George III Heplewhite mahogany sideboard with inlaid satinwood panels, circa 1790-1800. (Photo 3) The richness and quality of James Wm. It is 31 inches long and a plump, "furry" 5 inches wide. A hard-to-find form, this c. 1895 fox is attributed to the weathervane manufacturer J. L. Mott Iron Works, which was located on Beekman St. in NYC and on Wabash Ave. in Chicago.

The bold original set of brass hardware creates a choice pattern dressing the rich walnut surface. Even the graduation of the drawers were favorably done to unite a sense of subtle beauty.
